Portia Nelson – Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

Chapter One
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost . . . I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault . . .
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in this same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it there.
I still fall . . . it’s a habit . . . but,
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter Four
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Portia Nelson

This  amazing poem by Portia Nelson shows, in an interesting way the power of old habits, and that it might be challenging to change them at first. It also shows you that if you put your mind and heart to it, it is possible to change those habits which don’t benefit you and limit your potential.

It might take time & effort to change your old habits, but if they do not benefit and serve you, if they sabotage your success, your happiness and your fulfillment, it is worth to do so. Your Paradigm – set of inner beliefs in your subconscious mind influence your decisions, your behaviour, your actions, your results and therefore the quality of your life. In order to have a permanent desired change in your results you have to create the inner shift first. Transformation in your results begins with inner transformation. Change your habits, shift your paradigm and you will change your results and your life.
